Art Association of Henry County - Reason to belong
A note from the Educational Programs Director

AAHC membership has its perks. Just ask Marilyn Witt, Vida Hilbert, or Dick Ingersoll, who frequent "Two Dollar Tuesdays" in the painting studio. This $2 "member only" gathering of artists finds watercolor, oils, pastels, and general creativity covering canvas and paper. Up the stairs at the Art Center reveals this inviting studio space: a large, well-lit room amply equipped with easels, tables, chairs, and drop cloths. Many windows, including vistas of the Arts Park, give an open-air quality to our hardwood floor studio.
Another exclusive for Art Association members is "Open Clay Studio". Conceived by Austin Custer, resident potter extraordinaire, Open Clay affords member artists the opportunity to utilize the pottery room. Most Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, members pay $5 to use pottery wheels, tools, slab roller, as well as included space in kiln firing loads. (Excessive clay & glaze use additional) Members may also work on continuing projects during business hours through the week-simply sign in with attending docent, and deposit your $5 fee.
A couple of relatively new classes are fast becoming "clubs" here at the Art Center. Susan Gibson's "Knitting for Fun with Friends" is enjoyed by many members. AAHC board meetings usually feature our board president Debby Weidert's latest knitted sensation. Also, Austin Custer & Sarah West have instructed a Glass Slumping (Google it) class, which is catching on, and becoming a Thursday evening habit for a few members.
Member kids have had fun also during the last decade with the "Kid's Kiln Club". Basic pinch, coil, slab, and wheel techniques are taught by Angela Dishman. A computerized kiln was purchased several years ago with the help of Kiln Club funding (the club's original purpose). This ongoing club continues to help fund the Art Center and Ceramic Studio needs. KKC is open to member and non-members, ages 8 & up, at a class fee of $25/$20 AAHC members, and includes 2 two hour sessions.
In addition, member opportunities include a venue for creating and organizing instruction of your own art. Past courses offered by members include Drawing, Watercolor, Oils, Wheel Throwing, Figure Sculpting, Stained Glass, Play Writing, Children's Courses, Seasonal/Holiday Arts & Crafts, and even Yoga!
So, yes, AAHC membership has its perks. Educational Programs are offered to members at lower class fees. Any member interested in teaching or attending classes, or who have an interest in being part of our Education Committee, please contact me at your convenience.
